The Pre-War Brooklands History of Alta Chassis 62IS
Built in 1938 for Hugh C. Hunter, chassis 62IS is one of the most significant surviving Alta competition cars. Supplied as a kit of parts to R.R. Jackson’s Brooklands premises, its construction involved noted engineer and special-builder Zillwood ‘Sinbad’ Milledge.
The designation 62IS denotes ‘Independent Suspension’ (I) and ‘supercharged’ (S), reflecting Geoffrey Taylor’s advanced thinking and Alta’s reputation for producing exceptionally light and technically sophisticated racing cars. The car also benefitted with a light weight all aluminium engine in a four cylinder 2.0 litre capacity which give huge torque.
Hunter campaigned 62IS extensively before the war, earning a coveted Brooklands 120mph badge and competing at venues including Crystal Palace and Shelsley Walsh. Following the war, the Alta returned to competition and appeared at sprint, hillclimb and circuit events including Goodwood and Silverstone.
Goodwood Revival, HGPCA and VSCC Competition Provenance
The car subsequently passed through the hands of a number of well-known historic racing enthusiasts, including Lady Mary Grosvenor, before entering the present ownership. It has enjoed numerous outings with the HGPCA and VSCC.
An entrant at the inaugural Goodwood Revival, Chassis 62IS has returned to Goodwood on several occasions to compete in the Goodwood Trophy, where her sister car Chassis 61 has won the last two years events pipping ERA R3A to the line in the last few moments of the race. 62IS has also been the subject of a multi-page Classic & Sports Car feature by Mick Walsh.
Supercharged DOHC Engineering and Historic Racing Eligibility
Mechanically, the Alta is powered by its supercharged four-cylinder DOHC engine, rated at 2 litres, coupled to an ENV four-speed pre-selector gearbox, with independent suspension.
For approximately the past seven years the car has been housed at Brooklands Museum and has not been actively campaigned. It will therefore require a comprehensive recommissioning before returning to competition, 62IS was present at Brooklands 100 just a few weeks ago, following a successful showing at Yorkshire Elegance concours where she came 3rd in class.
Once recommissioned, 62IS represents an exciting and highly eligible entry for leading historic events such as the Goodwood, Monaco and the Seaman Trophy, as well as suitable VSCC and HGPCA meetings.
