Built for Power: Competition-Focused Rapier Engineering

This Rapier’s current form traces its roots to Australian engineer Ross Stewart, who reimagined the Lagonda engine to meet 1100cc class regulations. Using a sleeved-down block with a 62mm bore and 90mm stroke, the engine displaces 1087cc. To extract every ounce of performance, Stewart designed and machined a bespoke blower drive case, enabling a two-stage supercharger layout. Operating at 22psi boost on the rolling road and capable of up to 28psi, the engine delivers an impressive 180BHP.

Competition-Ready Engineering Throughout

Following Ross Stewart’s ownership, the car was comprehensively recommissioned in the UK by a respected PVT race engineer. In 2009, it was fitted with new Dunlop racing tyres and rolling-road tested at 180BHP at 6,000rpm on 22psi boost. That same year it won its class at Phoenix Park, finishing ahead of a Bugatti Type 35B. It later joined the Jolyon Harrison collection in the UK and was painted in his team colours of BRG and was run at Harewood Hill Climb in 2018, where it set a new class record. The current owner based in the EU has since competed at Nürburgring Classic in 2019 and 2022, as well as occasional UK track events..

Competition-Ready Engineering Throughout

To manage this level of performance, the car was fitted with a pre-war Riley crash gearbox with close-ratio gears. Standard Rapier components, such as the ENV pre-selector box, were not capable of handling the output. Braking is provided by hydraulically operated twin-leading-shoe mechanisms inside Alfin 13″ drums

Designed to Be Driven: Practical Competition Details

A step-down gear case mounted on the rear axle allows the prop shaft to sit lower, enabling a central driving position without offsetting the cockpit. The aluminium coachwork is monoposto-style, with 1930s design cues including a headrest fairing, tail-mounted fuel tank, and a full undertray. The rev counter is a period chronometric unit.
