History and Provenance of HRG 1500 W158
Stamped on 4th March 1948, HRG chassis W158 left the works fitted with its 1500cc Singer engine on 8th April 1948. Delivered that December to Charles Langer of Kent, the car has since passed through nine custodians, each contributing to a life that spans two continents.
Several former owners led fascinating lives, their stories intertwined with the broader tapestry of postwar motoring history. This included a connection to Martin Luthor King, with a picture included in the history file of King with the then owner of W158.

Sympathetic Rebuild and Continued Enjoyment
Following its sale from Dr A G England’s estate in 2013, W158 underwent a sympathetic rebuild. The chassis and ancillaries were stripped and painted, the engine dismantled and rebuilt with replacement of worn components, a new clutch installed, and the bodywork refreshed. Electrical upgrades introduced indicators for modern road usability. Since completion, the car has proven its reliability in active use, including participation in the HRG 80th Anniversary in 2015.
Recent Maintenance and Enhancements
Our current vendor purchased W158 from us in summer 2024, enjoying father–son adventures on the HERO – ERA Shamrock Rally. During this time, thoughtful improvements included new tonneau, hood, and side screens, string-bound steering wheel, twin Mondi trip computers, and new Blockley tyres.
Around £7,000 was invested, ensuring this HRG is event-ready and immediately usable for rallies and tours alike.
Usability and Future Opportunities
With its matching numbers, and proven reliability, HRG 1500 W158 represents an ideal entrant for HRG Association and VSCC Historic class events. Combining mechanical integrity with authentic charm, it’s ready to be enjoyed straight away.
