History and Build

Registered in Surrey on 1 December 1938, HPC 939 began life as an SS Jaguar 2½-Litre Saloon. When transformed into an SS100 Special, its identity was preserved by retaining original mechanical components such as the engine, axles, steering and braking systems—parts shared with period sports models.

The SS100 body used is a complete original unit, dismantled and rebuilt with care. Much of the Ash frame remains from period, supplemented where required to strengthen what was once a delicate structure. The original aluminium skin was reused wherever possible, with only the sills replaced.

Key original items sourced for the project include the radiator shell, stone guard, bonnet, wings, fuel tank, headlamps, ‘owl’s eye’ tail lamps, instruments and steering wheel, all refurbished for continued use. Safety improvements include discreet indicators within the lamps. The cabin retains the original cigar lighter alongside a hidden socket for SatNav.

Finished in Gunmetal Grey matched to preserved factory paint, the interior trim also follows surviving samples. Weather equipment supplied includes hood, side screens, tonneau and hood bag. A detailed build summary accompanies the car.

Recent Mechanical Work

Since returning to the road in July 2015, the car has covered just over 2,000 miles and has remained easy to drive and reliable. Under current ownership, respected Jaguar specialist William Heynes has undertaken significant work including a full cylinder head rebuild, E5 conversion, distributor overhaul, carburettor rebuild with vacuum advance, suspension and brake improvements, upper steering column work and bonnet paint. A full inspection was also completed.
