Talbot-Lago T120 History with Raymond Mays Provenance

TL8749 began life as a Talbot-Lago T120 Coupé and was first registered in the UK in 1939 to Raymond Mays, the great ERA and BRM figure. It retains its original Lincolnshire registration number and is understood to have been received by Mays from Antonio “Tony” Lago following his 1939 Reims-Gueux drive for Talbot-Lago, although no known record currently links the car to the period between 1936 and 1939.

Mays kept the car throughout the war years before selling it in 1950 to John Bland. During the 1960s, TL8749 was owned by the noted Talbot enthusiast Anthony Blight, before passing in due course to respected Talbot-Lago specialist Bill Barrot.

Tom Hardman Limited brokered the sale of both known T120-based Tourist Trophy Sports-style cars in 2016, and is pleased to be handling TL8749 once again.

Tourist Trophy Sports-Style All-Alloy Bodywork

Bill Barrot was captivated by the 4-litre Talbot-Lago T150 Tourist Trophy Sports and shaped TL8749 into the purposeful sports car offered today. The chassis was shortened and, during the 1990s, Barrot created an all-alloy body inspired by Talbot-Lago’s great sports racers, with teardrop influence, enveloping wings and a confident competition stance.

Several period details remain especially interesting, including magnesium alloy wheels believed to relate to Mays’ own experiments with the material, together with a Raymond Mays radiator badge and horn button.

VSCC Competition Record and 3-Litre Performance

TL8749 was sold by Bill Barrot to John Guyatt in 1997, who campaigned it successfully in VSCC events. Bonhams recorded in 2015 that the car had, for many years, held class records at Loton Park, Wiscombe Park, Prescott and Shelsley Walsh, and Guyatt described it as one of the very best Talbot-Lagos he had driven. During the current ownership, TL8749 has continued to be used, developed and enjoyed as intended. With support from Gareth Burnett and the team at Pace Products, it became a highly effective VSCC machine and ultimately a VSCC ODM Championship winner.

During the 2020/21 off-season, Pace Products refreshed and further developed the engine performance and cooling system. The car now features a strong 3-litre naturally aspirated six-cylinder engine, reputedly producing in the region of 200 bhp, paired with a close-ratio Wilson pre-selector gearbox rebuilt by recognised specialist Cecil Schumacher.

The Next Chapter

On the road, TL8749 is fast, torquey and rich in mechanical character, with the versatility to suit open-road touring, long-distance events and VSCC competition. Offered with its VSCC Eligibility Document, UK V5C registration document and a copy of its Registre Talbot entry, this is a rare and compelling pre-war Talbot-Lago combining Raymond Mays provenance, Tourist Trophy Sports styling and a proven modern competition record.
